Thanadelthur was a Chipewan woman known for getting abducted by a group of Crees in 1713. About 3 other women were also abducted. During her time being held captive, Thanadelthur was often referred to as "Slave Woman". Later the same year, Thanadelthur and another woman managed to escape. Their intentions were to travel back to their land to reunite with their people, however hunger and the elements interfered with the plan. These two women were definitely not going back to their master, so they decided to go to York Fort instead. After one year of struggles and starvation, the body of Thanadelthur's companion gave up, and she died. Thanadelthur, however, continued her journey. In 1714, she eventually made it to the York Fort Factory (the headquatersof the Hudson's Bay Company), where she met servants who let her inside. James Knight, a director of the HBC was very thankful for her arrival. He had been searching desperately for a native translator to help convince the Cree First Nations to let the other northern first nations reach the trading post by bay side so that they could trade furs with his company. At the time, the Cree were armed, and posed a significant difficulty to the well -paid trade trade the company wanted to conduct. After being sent on a mission by James Knight to make peace between the Cree and the Chipewans, Thanadelthur finally got the two groups to make peace in 1715. James was very overjoyed, and he intended on providing Thanadelthur a safe way to go home. Thanadelthur was very enthusiastic about the plan, but she unfortunately died due to an illness in 1717 before she could go home. -AB
